According to Nate Bihldorf, Martin's voice quality never stuttered, nor did she flinch during long recording sessions. Martin was particularly proud of her " lava death scream". Lines were often recorded for the scene that was to be animated next. This was to ease the strain on Martin's voice when recording what she calls "effort sounds" (grunts of pain, breathing, screams and yells), usually at the end of a week. Sessions would take place a few days at a time, with breaks in between, and for a few hours a day. Recording her lines took almost two years, beginning in January 2009. She was not given the game's story before she began recording. Martin said that she feels like she and Samus "got to discover each other together" when she recorded her lines, and an unspecified traumatic event she experienced prior to recording helped her identify with the character. Martin was not allowed to play any video games at home, save for educational titles like Carmen Sandiego and Reader Rabbit, but she knew who Mario and Luigi were. She considered this an asset, as it allowed her to approach the character without any preconceived notions about who she was. Her knowledge and experience of the Metroid series was limited to non-existent before taking the role of Samus. Shortly after that, Martin went in for her first session. Her agent called to tell her she got the part when she was in her Seattle apartment during a snowstorm. She was asked to audition for the role of Samus, recording two scenes at her agent's office. Samus in Metroid: Other M was Martin's first role outside of university.
